What We Weld

The Preheat Discipline Most Shops Skip

 

A WPS that says "preheat 150°C" means nothing without enforcement. Inside our welding cell:

  • Contact pyrometer verification - at least 25mm from the joint edge on both sides, or 1.5× plate thickness if greater, so the parent metal is soaked through, not skin-warmed
  • Tack welds are not exempt - a cold tack is a crack starter that no post-weld preheat can undo
  • Interruption protocol - if the arc stops for shift change or equipment fault, the joint is re-verified at preheat temperature before the next pass
  • Low-hydrogen consumables - basic-coated electrodes held in rod ovens above 120°C from the moment the can opens
  • Interpass ceiling - monitored, not guessed
  • Postheat on high-risk joints - CEV above 0.55 or sections above 50mm get 250°C × 4h, with a time-temperature log you can audit

 

Documentation That Survives an Audit

 

Every batch ships with a weld file: the governing WPS, welder qualification records, preheat verification readings, interpass logs and visual inspection reports. If you're sourcing for Australian projects, this is the paper trail AS/NZS 5131 expects - and it's what separates a certified shop from a paper-compliant one.

Q: Can you weld to our WPS, or only your own?

A: Either. We qualify to your procedure if your project requires it, or supply our own qualified WPS with PQR documentation for your review.

Q: What's your maximum plate thickness?

A: We regularly weld combined thicknesses above 25mm where preheat becomes mandatory. Send us your drawing - thickness limits depend on the joint configuration and grade.

Q: Do you provide NDT?

A: Visual inspection is standard and documented on every weld. UT and MT are available through our audited partners on request.

Q: How do you handle high-CEV steels like Q690?

A: Calculated CEV per the IIW formula, mandatory preheat per AWS D1.1, low-hydrogen consumables, and postheat on thick sections - all logged.
