Two machines, one base, one alignment
A generator set is really two machines bolted to one piece of steel. If the base twists, the coupling between engine and alternator goes out of line, and that shows up as bearing failures a few thousand hours down the track.
We build genset bases with a rib pattern that keeps the engine rails and alternator pads in one plane. The pad surfaces are machined, and coplanarity between them is measured and recorded before shipment.
The base is also sized to handle the engine torque reaction. On a 4-cylinder diesel the torque pulses go straight into the base, so the base is heavier on the engine side and the ribs run perpendicular to the crankshaft.
Whatever the set needs
Radiator mounts, fuel tank cradles and battery trays get welded into the same frame on request. Skid lifting points are calculated for the assembled weight, not the bare frame, and stamped on the drawing.
We build single units for specials and repeat batches for genset assemblers. The first article of a batch is fully inspected before the rest run.
On canopied sets the base carries the enclosure support posts. The posts bolt into the same base pattern, so the base has to have the holes for the engine, alternator and enclosure all in the right places.
Transportation and lifting
Genset bases are lifted by fork or by crane. Fork pockets are welded into the base at the right spacing for standard forklifts, and they are reinforced top and bottom so the fork does not crush the tube.
Crane lifting points are calculated for the assembled weight: engine, alternator, radiator, fuel tank, enclosure, all of it. The lifting lugs are stamped with the safe working load and the lifting angle.
For container shipping the base is sized to the container width. On wider sets the base has removable lifting eyes that come off for shipping and go back on for installation.

Frequently asked questions
Can you include fork pockets in the base?
Yes. Fork pockets are welded in at standard forklift spacing, reinforced top and bottom so the fork does not crush the tube. Tell us the fork width and height you need to accommodate and we size the pockets.
How do you calculate the lifting points?
The lifting lugs are calculated for the assembled weight of the whole set: engine, alternator, radiator, fuel tank, enclosure and the base itself. The lugs are positioned above the center of gravity so the set lifts level. Each lug is stamped with the safe working load and the lifting angle.
Can you build the base for a canopied set?
Yes. The enclosure posts bolt into the same base pattern as the engine and alternator. We drill all three sets of holes in the base: engine rails, alternator pads and enclosure posts. The base is the single reference for the whole package.
What is coplanarity and why does it matter on a genset base?
Coplanarity means the engine pads and alternator pads are all in the same plane. If they are not, the engine and alternator twist when bolted down, and the coupling goes out of alignment. We machine the pads and measure coplanarity before the base ships, and the number goes on the inspection report.
Can you size the base to container width?
Yes. The base is sized so the assembled set fits in a standard container. On wider sets the lifting eyes are removable so they come off for shipping and go back on for installation. We can also build the base in two pieces that bolt together for oversized sets.
