For shaft-mounted reducers we weld in the torque arm boss instead of a foot pattern, again to the catalogue dimension. On reducers above 55 kW the base is ribbed under the pad to stop the pad from flexing under the reaction torque. Without the rib the pad deflects a few thousandths under load and the bolt preload drops, which lets the reducer creep.

The pad carries the torque

A reducer base looks like a simple stand until you think about what it actually resists: the full output torque of the gearbox, reacting through the mounting feet, every time the machine starts.

So the top pad is machined flat after welding, and the bolt pattern is drilled to the gearbox footprint. Dowel holes are reamed where the drawing wants fixed positioning, which saves an hour of alignment every time the reducer comes off for seal replacement.

The bolt size on the foot pattern is not a guess. The reducer catalogue specifies the bolt grade and torque. We use the catalogue bolt size, not a smaller one that fits the hole, because a reducer under torque will tear out an undersized bolt.

Grout, shims and installation

The base has grout holes in the bottom plate so the void under the base fills with grout after installation. Without grout the base sits on four bolts and rattles.

Shim pockets are welded under the foot positions so the fitter can shim the base level without stacking loose shims on the floor. The shims sit in a pocket that locates them under the bolt.

Anchor sleeve positions are marked on the drawing and drilled in the base plate so the anchor bolts go through cleanly. We do not ship a base with pilot holes that the installer has to drill out on site.

Frequently asked questions

I know the reducer model but not the bolt pattern. Can you find it?

Yes. Give us the reducer model and manufacturer and we pull the foot bolt pattern, pilot diameter and bolt grade from the catalogue. SEW, Flender, Sumitomo, Nord and the Chinese builders are all common in our shop. You do not need to send us the reducer drawing.

Why do you rib the pad on large reducers?

Under torque the top pad deflects. A few thousandths of deflection drops the bolt preload and the reducer creeps on the pad. A rib under the pad stops the deflection. Above 55 kW the rib is standard. Below that the pad is thick enough on its own.

What are grout holes for?

After the base is bolted down on anchor bolts, grout is poured under the base to fill the void between the base plate and the concrete. Without grout the base sits on the bolts and vibrates. Grout holes in the base plate let the grout flow through and fill the void. We drill them to the installation drawing.

Do you include dowel holes?

Yes, where the drawing calls for fixed positioning. Dowel holes are reamed and fitted with dowel pins so the reducer goes back in the same position after removal. That saves an hour of alignment every time the reducer comes off for seal replacement.

Can you build for a shaft-mounted reducer?

Yes. Shaft-mounted reducers do not have a foot pattern. They have a torque arm that stops the reducer body from rotating. We weld in a torque arm boss to the catalogue dimension instead of drilling a foot pattern.
